I'm thinking these days about reducing my caloric intake during keto due to my slow, incremental weight loss. Of course, there are simple ways of doing this, and the most obvious is portion control. Overeating is something I tend to do and always have done. I don't really understand why I overeat. I appear to lack that thing in my brain that indicates my stomach is full. Of course, overeating is why I am overweight at seventy-three years old. So, the first rule is that portion control, no matter what you eat, is the key to living a healthy life. In fact, portion control might be more critical with keto. Therefore, because of the high fat associated with the keto diet, calories might begin to matter if left unchecked. Restricting carbs while increasing fat does not work if you overfeed yourself. Moreover, the rich foods keto allows mean that less is definitely more, and smaller portions are still very satisfying. The linked study verifies this while underscoring the keto diet's advantages. The study confirms that overeating is the main reason people fail to lose weight on keto. This article describes seven other reasons keto might not work as well. Portion control is key to solving the calorie problem. While counting calories is clearly acceptable, it is unnecessary if the portions are reasonable. Your stomach is the size of two hands cupped together. Therefore, exceeding that amount of food stretches the stomach, worsening the problem. In our house, food is an event. We love eating together and enjoying our friends and family over for large, satisfying meals. However, eating everything offered is not required, and limiting food intake by eating selectively and slowly is the key to a continuing weight loss. Moreover, as stated in earlier blogs, fasting is part of my keto routine, so I do not participate in the "three meals a day" routine. That's a social construct I do not adhere to, and it is an excellent thing. Else I'd be larger than I am now. Therefore, Steve and I eat one large meal each day and snack if we get hungry within the 16:8 fasting hours discussed on my diet page. I am stating the obvious in today's blog, but sometimes I need to remind myself about what I must do to remain on track, and my goal is to complete losing the weight I need to lose to at least get to the top end of the recommended weight range for my height and age for health and longevity. After all, I love my life, and I want to keep living is as long as possible!
